Single Parent Holidays
UK & Abroad
As a single parent, taking a holiday abroad might feel a bit daunting, Great news! Travelling as a single parent can be a fun and stress-free experience. Fun holidays with kids clubs can take the strain off and give you a break from your normal routines. All-inclusive holidays are also a great option as they offer stress-free meals which are often buffet-style options, so you can eat what you like for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Not forgetting the snacks, drinks, and ice cream. Enjoy your time away!
Plan what it is you want from your holiday, is it relaxation, adventure, days at the beach, water sports, touring around museums, ancient ruins, swimming with the dolphins etc.
Look for food options: Self catering where you can please yourself when and where to eat. This gives you the freedom to explore the local cuisine in restaurants, cafes and bars.
Some hotels and apartments offer room only without cooking facilities. Total freedom to try out the local venues, sometimes there are facilities on site (payable).
Half Board. A popular choice with breakfast and dinner included (Often buffet style). This allows you to enjoy your day as you wish, take a coach tour, boat trip or just laze on the beach or around the pool.
All-Inclusive. There are some great All-Inclusive packages where you get all meals, snacks and drinks (Usually local beers and wines and amounts you have may be restricted) and kids drinks and ice creams without dipping into your pocket. Al-a Carte meals are usually not included and chargeable. Some hotels offer table service and complimentary wine or juice at the table with set meals/menu. The downside could be to get the best value from your holiday you need to stay in the complex to enjoy all the food, drinks and facilities. If you decide to go out for the day on a coach trip some places offer a picnic bag to take with you providing you order the day before (see their terms).
Trips. Always check that the trip/s you are interested in cater for the little ones, check for age or height restrictions. Most theme parks/water parks have these restrictions so it's best to check before booking your trip. Some trips may not be suitable for children especially if in very hot humid climates, like long walks up volcanic mountain sides as an example, look carefully at evening excursions as these can be quite busy and noisy.
Beaches: Check the beach is a gently sloping one for the kids to play in, always be on your guard for under currents, and beaches where there's a big drop. Check if there is a lifeguard station close by, look out for the red and yellow striped flags (mostly European). Ensure there's sufficient shade as the sun can ruin a holiday as it can make it!. It's all to easy to get immersed in a good read, or get distracted, toddlers and young children often wander off. Prepare for the lost child situation, might be an idea to take a photo of them at the start of the day to record what they are wearing etc. Keep within arms reach of toddlers and ensure you are all well hydrated. Carbonated and sugary drinks can cause stomach issues in extreme heat so it's best to avoid these and drink bottled water. Choosing the right clothing is important with consideration to footwear. Beaches often have fragments of coral, shells, volcanic rocks etc, which can be painful if stepped on, plus they give some protection from the heat of the sand. Sudden larger waves can knock you off your feet so always face the water so you know what's coming, avoid touching marine life, jellyfish, urchins and unfamiliar fish. Apply a good factor sunscreen on a regular basis, protect yourself from the sun, especially when you exit the water.
Kids love to dig holes in the sand, great fun but a very deep one can be a hazard if they collapse, and suffocate a young child. Best to dig shallow ones and always fill in your hole before leaving.
We hope some of the above is helpful and wish you a happy and safe holiday.
